Welcome to 2010
Last fall, closing the gates for the season coincided with some very nice weather. This provided us with a window of opportunity to squeeze in some projects that have been on our radar since moving to this location. The old barn and out buildings have been newly refurbished, staying with a board and baton theme to maintain the integrity of the original structures. Making quite a statement with its new roof and mural doors, the barn is already becoming a local landmark. A couple of smaller buildings have been tied together to create a unique housing and display area for our growing menagerie of pets. They include doves, bantams, peacocks, various breeds of dwarf rabbits and the latest additions - Petunia & Violet, our mini Vietnamese pot bellied pigs. Another 100' hoop house is now open to customers and again increases the variety of plant material to select from. The crowning jewel in the centre of our renovations is a new water feature which creates a completely new environment within the nursery. Once landscaped, it will essentially turn the entire courtyard into a display garden, featuring many of the trees, shrubs, plants and gift shop items that we have available.
The daylily production beds formerly in this area have been moved and greatly expanded into a larger area of the property. All of these plants have been divided and lined out, making most varieties available for digging on the spot if they are not already available potted. This field of daylilies plus approximately 4000 one gallon pots provides an excellent selection. NEW this year will be the availability of cutting edge daylily seedlings. Our entire 2008 seed crop from ‘state of the art' parentage is being container grown. This is the most anticipated crop of seedlings in the 15 years that we have been hybridizing. Nearly 6000 pots should potentially bloom over the course of the summer and the majority will be available to anyone looking for the newest genetics at very reasonable prices.
Many long time customers were surprised last season to see a substantial portion of the nursery devoted to shrubs and trees. From basics like Cedar hedging and Red Maples to some of the newest grafted material and dwarf conifers, we have expanded to be of assistance to all gardeners. Whether you are landscaping a property from scratch or seeking out that special collector specimen, we can offer firsthand experience as we have spent the past several seasons passionately doing both. Please feel free to inquire about items you are looking for. If it is early in the season we can probably locate it for you if we don't already have it in stock.
Well established after a great growing season in 2009, our hosta inventory will provide excellent value with strong root systems, full pots and proven varieties. Our goal isn't to have all the hostas that are available, in fact just the opposite. We select the best of the new that are distinctive and complement the classics. We tend to test and cull many new intros. If we wouldn't plant it, we won't sell it.
Try to allow lots of time if you are planning a visit. In addition to lots of great plant material we offer a gift shop, pond supplies, display gardens and lots of great areas to wander about and have a picnic. Literally, there is "a surprise around every corner". Last, but not least our friendly and knowledgeable staff is eager to help with design, selection and general gardening questions. It is worth the drive to Dunnville!
OUR POLICY regarding putting items on SALE has remained consistent for the past 14 years – we don’t do it. With so many customers visiting several times over the course of the season we know it is disheartening to see something you bought in May discounted in July. Instead, we keep our prices reasonable at all times and any “specials” that we offer run for the entire season, to be fair to everyone. This includes our “Random Collection” and our popular “Five Dollar Table”.
